New AfDB Report Analyses Arab Spring and Options for Future

19-Jun-2012 - A new report from the African Development Bank (AfDB) analyses the causes of the various political events in 2011 in various North African countries, or the Arab Spring.  It goes on to suggest various policy options to policy makers in the countries under transition. The report, entitled ‘Jobs, Justice and the Arab Spring: Inclusive Growth in North Africa’ is produced by the AfDB’s North Africa department.

Economic Valuation of Land Crucial for African Development, Rio+20 Hears

18-Jun-2012 - Land valuation was the topic of the first event held by the African Development Bank (AfDB) at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro. The AfDB held the event, entitled “Economic Valuation of Land: An Approach to Advance Sustainable Development in the Context of a Green Economy”, in partnership with Global Mechanism on 14 June. An expert panel discussed the economic valuation of land as an approach to advance sustainable development in the context of a green economy.

AfDB Hosts Talks on Accelerating Green Growth in Africa at Rio+20

18-Jun-2012 - the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro. The event, entitled “Facilitating Green Growth in Africa: Perspectives from the African Development Bank”, was held on 14 June. The AfDB’s Chief Climate Change Specialist at the AfDB, Frank Sperling, explained how green growth is premised on the notion that economic growth can be achieved through a range of economic activities.

AfDB Hails Public-Private Partnerships as Major Aid to African Water and Sanitation

18-Jun-2012 - Public finance is not enough to meet Africa’s growing need for better water and sanitation, said a senior African Development Bank (AfDB)  official at a conference on the subject.  Private funding must also play its part, he said. Mr Sering Jallow, director of the AfDB’s Water and Sanitation Department, made his remarks at a conference held in Dakar, Senegal, between 5 and 8 June.

18-Jun-2012 - Attending the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, which opened on 18 June, the president of the African Development Bank, Donald Kaberuka, made the following declaration regarding the economic situation in  Africa, noting that current growth is strong but warning that indecision or poor decisions by the global community could harm its future prospects. "I hope this G20 Summit can give a positive signal and act decisively,  bearing in mind the global consequences of inaction, especially on low income countries."

15-Jun-2012 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) hosted a Joint MDB Adaptation Finance Tracking Workshop on the sidelines of the Climate Change Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), held from 14 to 25 May in Bonn, Germany. 11-Jun-2012 - The railways sector development project in the East African Community (EAC) region was at the center of discussions during the Bank’s 2012 Annual Meetings in Arusha, Tanzania.
