African Water Facility Awarded US$12 Million Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Advance Water and Sanitation Services in Africa

19-Jul-2011 - Tunis, July 19, 2011- The African Water Facility (AWF), an initiative of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is awarded a grant of US$ 12 Million by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to finance projects to advance water and sanitation services across Africa. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced this grant at the AfricaSan 3 conference in Rwanda as part of more than $40 million in new investments launching its Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene strategy.

AfDB agrees Euro 45 million loan for Cameroon power plant

15-Jul-2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of Euro 45 million towards the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Cameroon to help meet the country’s fast-growing demand for energy. The plant will be located nine kilometers inland north of the southern coastal city of Kribi and the transmission line will be connected to Cameroon’s southern interconnected power grid, which supplies 90 percent of total demand in the country.

AfDB-Rwanda: USD 37.6 Million Grant to Finance Poverty Reduction Strategy Support Programme

15-Jul-2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF) today in Tunis approved a budget support grant of USD 37.6 million (UA 23.2 million) from ADF-12 resource allocations to finance The Poverty Reduction Strategy Support Programme (PRSSP) Phase IV of  Rwanda. The ADF support to the PRSSP-IV constitutes 13.9% of the total grant resources of USD 271.2 (UA 167.4 million) to which other development partners including the World Bank, European Union, Great Britain (DFID) and Germany are contributing.

AfDB set to accompany South Sudan on path to development

13-Jul-2011 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) shared in the history making event in Juba last Saturday, as South Sudan became Africa’s newest sovereign state. AfDB Regional Director for East Africa, Steve Kayizzi–Mugerwa represented the Bank, accompanied by the Bank’s Resident Representative in Khartoum, Abdul Kamara. South Sudan has already applied to become a regional member country of the AfDB.
