AfDB Supports Tanzania Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme

15-Sep-2010 - Tunis, 15 September 2010 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved a USD 98-million (UA* 65 million) loan and grant to finance phase two of Tanzania’s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (RWSSI II). The funding, approved on Wednesday, 15 September 2010 in Tunis, comprises a UA 59-million loan from the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional window of the AfDB Group, and a UA 6-million Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSSI) Trust Fund Grant.

03-Sep-2010 - Speaking during the AfDB president’s inauguration, the Tunisian prime minister, Mohamed Ghannouchi, commended Mr. Kaberuka for his human and professional qualities which have resulted in the building of a consensus around him. He also hailed Mr. Kaberuka’s predecessors, the institution’s management and staff which have made it possible for the AfDB to become a key economic development player on the continent.

AfDB President Starts Second Term

27-Aug-2010 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, will on September 1, 2010, start a second five-year mandate. Mr. Kaberuka was reelected by acclamation during the institution’s Annual Meetingsheld from 27-28 May 2010 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Sudan Field Office Concludes Business Continuity Training

02-Aug-2010 - The Sudan Field Office (SDFO) successfully completed a two-day workshop on Integration of Field Offices to the Bank’s Business Continuity program from July 19-20, 2010 in Khartoum, Sudan. The training was designed to prepare field offices on how to minimize business disruptions, implement effective disaster recovery efforts, such as planning ahead particularly, for systems protection and restoration -- and effective handling of natural hazards -- for resumption of normal operations and business continuity as quickly as possible.

AfDB President Meets Senior Ugandan Government Officials

30-Jul-2010 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Donald Kaberuka, took the opportunity of his presence in Kampala to attend the 15th African Union Summit held from 25-27 July 2010 and to meet with various senior government officials including Mrs. Syda Bbumba, Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development; and other ministers in charge of key portfolios such as water and environment; works and transport; and energy and mineral development.

Private Sector and Infrastructure in Africa: The State Still Has a Role to Play

29-Jul-2010 - The achievements of Pprivate infrastructure projects are increasing in Africa, according to a study published recently. The study, presented which was released at the 2008 start of the African Economic Conference of 2008  and published in July 2010, notes that Sub- Saharan Africa recorded has seen the emergence of 357 private infrastructure projects between 1990 and 2007, representing investments of more than 68 billion US dollars.

26-Jul-2010 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, along with Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, attended an African Union Investment Summit Round Table meeting on Saturday, 24 July 2010 in Kampala, Uganda. The round table luncheon was held under the auspices of the 15th African Union Summit held from 25-27 July 2010  in the Ugandan capital.

AfDB Hosts ADF Countries’ Ambassadors Accredited to Tunisia

23-Jul-2010 - The AfDB senior management on July 22, 2010, in Tunis hosted ambassadors of the African Development Fund (ADF) countries accredited to Tunisia. The meeting falls within the framework of the upcoming meeting on the ADF replenishment scheduled for September 2010 in Tunis. ADF plenipotentiaries had held other meetings in Helsinki, Cape Town, and, recently, in Abidjan on the sidelines of the institution’s Annual Meetings to discuss the fund’s replenishment.

19-Jul-2010 - Coffee producers in Africa accounted for about 12% of global supply and less than 11% of global exports of the product for the 2009/10 season. These contributions to the global coffee market are almost equal to Indonesia’s, the third largest world producer of the commodity. Notwithstanding the small contribution of African countries to the global coffee market, the commodity constitutes a large proportion of both GDP and exports share in some of the continent’s small economies.

World Population Day-Harnessing Potentials of Africa’s Youthful Population

12-Jul-2010 - With over 40% of its population below 15 years, Africa is by far the continent with the largest global youthful population.  But Africa is also the poorest continent in the world. A contradiction of sorts: A continent with nearly half its population comprised of youth; a land literally dripping with huge mineral and natural resources and a place where poverty seems to have found sublime abode. Generally, the word youth is synonymous with vigor, determination, inspiration, creativity and handwork.

12-Jul-2010 - The 2010 World Population Day which was observed on Sunday, July 11, 2010 raises urgent development issues in Africa, especially issues relating to poverty reduction which is the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group’s key operations mandate. The theme of this Year’s World Population Day is:  “Everyone Counts-Say What You Need”. The overall world population had grown from about 2.9 billion in 1960 when most African countries were just gaining their political independence to surpass a 6.8 billion people today.

President Kaberuka will Attend Second High Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing

09-Jul-2010 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Donald Kaberuka, will join other distinguished personalities at the second meeting of the High Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing scheduled to take place from 12-13 July 2010 in New York. The event will be the second meeting of the High Level Group and it will consider reports from Working Groups which examined a range of potential public and private sources of finance The Copenhagen Accord sets out the objective of mobilizing $100 billion per year in additional resources by 2020.
