21-Oct-2009 - Speaking on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in Helsinki, Finland, within the framework of the eleventh replenishment of the African Development Fund’s (ADF-11) mid-term review, the African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Donald Kaberuka, said the review came at a very critical time for the African continent, pointing out that what began as a financial crisis at the global economy’s epicenter had translated into an economic crisis for many countries on the continent.
17-Oct-2009 - At the instance of the AfDB President, Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai, has accepted to deliver a lecture on the theme: “Natural Resource Management and Poverty Reduction: Strengthening the Links.” The theme of the lecture, which has been scheduled to take place on October 27, 2009, in Tunis, Tunisia, has been motivated by the need to deepen current understanding of how good practice in the use of natural resources can promote accelerated poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability and development, particularly in rural parts of Africa.

Prof. Michelo Hansungule, an independent consultant from the Centre of Human Rights of the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa, has been recruited to undertake a study on the performance of the IRM over the past three years and to provide recommendations on how we could improve the effectiveness of the Bank’s IRM.

01-Oct-2009 - Tunis, 30 September 2009 – As part of its 2009 borrowing program, the African Development Bank successfully executed a USD 1 billion benchmark global bond issue in the international market. The 3-year bond, lead managed by Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, was priced at mid swap flat and carries a coupon of 1.75%.

11-Sep-2009 - Ms. Nilmini Rubin, a senior member of staff on the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee (which has oversight over the Multilateral Development Banks) recently visited Ghana as part of a study to assess project and programme effectiveness of aid, and proffer recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of international financial institution funding. She was accompanied by Mr. Phil Cummings (Chief, Economic Section of the US Embassy in Accra).
