AfDB engages governments and policy-makers at Investing in African Mining Indaba

20-Feb-2017 - The Investing in African Mining Indaba, one of the world’s largest mining conference, wrapped up on 9 February, 2017, in Cape Town, South Africa with the African Development Bank playing a key role in helping to shape the continent’s future in the sector. This year, the Bank, which is one of the  major sponsors of the event, hosted three key sessions to help improve African governments’ knowledge and skills in the global mining sector.

Bank Group Set to Fund Infrastructure Projects in Africa

02-Feb-2017 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has mobilized US$1.6 billion to finance various infrastructure improvement projects across Africa. The projects, which are mainly concentrated in transport and energy sectors, will help provide the continent with modern, world-class infrastructure, Dr. Ini Urua, Acting Manager, NEPAD Division, said while speaking with the press in Addis Ababa at the end of the African Union summit which took place from January 29-30, 2007.

AfDB Director General, East African Region, hands over keys to Bank-funded Customs office building in Juba, South Sudan

02-Feb-2017 - African Development Bank Group Director General, East African Region, Gabriel Negatu handed over the keys to the new Bank-funded Customs Building to the Government of South Sudan on January 26, 2017. The Minister of Finance Stephen Dhieu Dau received the keys to the building on behalf of the Government. The new office building was built by the Chinese New Era Company through a grant from African Development Bank under the Public Financial Management and Aid Coordination (PFAID) project.

AfDB scaling up support for Africa’s development at AU Summit

30-Jan-2017 - The African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina, attended the official opening ceremony of the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, which kicked off Monday in Addis Ababa. The meeting featured the announcement of the election of President Alpha Condé of Guinea as the new Chairperson of the African Union (AU) and the launch of the theme "Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in the Youth". Condé succeeds President Idriss Deby of Chad in the role.

Sustainable and responsible tourism driving development in Africa

24-Jan-2017 - The United Nations has declared 2017 as "International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development", with the official launch by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on January 18 in Madrid. On this occasion, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai put the continued growth of tourism into figures: “In 2016, more than 1.2 billion people travelled around the world for tourism purposes and another 6 billion people travelled domestically,” he said, highlighting the need to promote more sustainable tourism.

Financé par le Fonds africain de développement (FAD) du Groupe de la BAD, à hauteur de 20,99 millions d’Unités de Compte (UC) - environ 32 millions de dollars -, ce projet profitera à environ 2 millions de personnes, contribuant notamment à améliorer leurs conditions de  santé.

UN World Data Forum wraps up with launch of Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data

20-Jan-2017 - The inaugural United Nations World Data Forum concluded Wednesday with the launch of a global plan for better data to improve people’s lives, and new ideas and solutions to boost the collaboration, resources and policies needed to put it into action. The Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data, which will be adopted by countries at the UN Statistical Commission when it meets in March of this year, was prepared with inputs from the global statistical community and data experts from a wider range of stakeholders.

Africa/France Summit: AfDB President urges action to finance Africa's economic transformation

Speaking before African leaders at the Africa-France Summit which took place in Bamako on January 13-14, Mr. Adesina stressed that Africa can speed up its economic transformation through the Bank’s five main priorities, the “High 5”: “Light up and power Africa”; “Feed Africa”; “Industrialize Africa”; “Integrate Africa”; and “Improve the quality of life of African populations.
