09-Jan-2013 - A new report by the African Development Bank makes concrete proposals for the establishment of a monetary union in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa region (COMESA). In order to achieve greater macroeconomic convergence in the region, the “Facilitating Multilateral Fiscal Surveillance in the Monetary Union Context with Focus on the COMESA Region” study envisages a boost to fiscal surveillance at both regional and national levels.
04-Jan-2013 - The African Development Bank and the Government of Malawi officially launched the UA 29.45 million Malawi Higher Education, Science and Technology (HEST) Project in Ntchisi, Malawi, in December.
The Bank has provided an ADF loan of UA 9.05 million and a grant of UA 10 million plus an additional loan of UA 6.5 million from the Nigerian Trust Fund, while the Government of Malawi is to provide UA 2.95 million in counterpart funding.
03-Jan-2013 - The African Water Facility (AWF) held its 12th Governing Council meeting on November 22-23, in Tunis. The meeting narrowed in on the progress made on the implementation of the AWF Strategy 2012-2016, adopted late 2011, and on AWF’s overall progress and achievements.
28-Dec-2012 - In his welcoming remarks the Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning Alexander Chikwanda commended African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka for the support the Bank has provided since 1971 amounting to US $1.4 billion. The Minister also commended the Bank’s initiative and support on the Kazungula Bridge project, which links Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi River.
27-Dec-2012 - The Governor of the Bank of Zambia, Michael Gondwe, commended African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka for his outstanding leadership and the Bank’s positive contribution to the economies of the continent. Gondwe’s comments came during a Bank of Zambia luncheon hosted in honour of Kaberuka, which was attended by former AfDB Bank President, Willa Mung’Omba (1980 to 1985), the former Governor of the Bank of Zambia, and former Government of Zambia Finance Ministers, among others.
27-Dec-2012 - African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka said African countries have made great strides in growing their economies despite the global financial crisis during an official visit to Lusaka, Zambia, on December 19.
At the PTA Bank’s meeting of Governors in the Zambian capital, Kaberuka delivered a keynote address at a panel discussion on the theme Africa Economic Outlook and Regional Integration Priorities. He observed that the financial crisis had taught Africa how to minimize the impact of the global crisis on African economies.
27-Dec-2012 - African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka met with cooperating partners and ambassadors in Lusaka on December 21 to discuss development opportunities and challenges in Zambia.
Kaberuka indicated that he particularly wanted to gain feedback on whether the new Bank Strategy was relevant to address the emerging challenges of rapid growth in the midst of high levels of poverty.

26-Dec-2012 - Three major energy projects financed by the African Development Bank in Ouarzazate, Morocco; Menengai, Kenya; et Bujagali, Uganda; were featured in a film project which captured 25 sustainable energy projects on the African continent in the context of the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy.
20-Dec-2012 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved on December 19th 2012, a USD 21 million package to finance the implementation of the Zanzibar Urban Water and Sanitation Project in the United Republic of Tanzania. The Government will contribute 10% of the project costs.
The project will be implemented from 2013 in the Unguja municipality which is Zanzibar’s administrative center and the hub of its economic, cultural and tourist activities. It is scheduled to be completed after four years.
20-Dec-2012 - AfDB President, Donald Kaberuka, was a guest speaker at the Meeting of the Board of Governors of PTA Bank in Lusaka, Zambia, on 19 December, 2012. He was invited to provide his assessment of the global economy and Africa’s development. Although African economies are currently experiencing growth, Kaberuka guarded against hyperbole. “We should be wary of simplistic extrapolations; instead we should plan today on how to manage in a highly uncertain global environment,” he said.

14-Dec-2012 - On December 14, 2102 in Khartoum, the African Development Bank and the Government of Sudan launched the project on Capacity Enhancement for Debt Management and Resource Mobilization (CEDMRM). The US $1.5 million grant from Fragile States Facility (Pillar III) was approved by the Bank’s Board early this year and the agreement signed with the Government on May 3, 2012. This project launch was presided over by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy, Abdalla Elhusein.
13-Dec-2012 - The Fifth Annual Meeting of the African Community of Practice on Managing for Development Results (AfCoP) opened on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in Tunis with emphasis on the need to support achieve economic growth that is shared by everyone.
In a speech at the opening of the three-day conference on the theme, “Putting Results First in Africa,” the African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Donald Kaberuka, underscored the importance of the AfCoP and its objective to improved conditions for people across Africa.
13-Dec-2012 - The Ministry of Regional Development and Planning and the African Development Bank jointly organized a seminar on 12-13 June 2012 on the theme: “Towards a New Growth Model in Tunisia”. The meeting provided an opportunity of interaction between Tunisian academics, development actors and policy makers, so as to help them capitalize on the results of research conducted on the economic and social development model.
