The reasons for the increase in size and purchasing power of the African middle class include strong economic growth, and a move towards a stable, salaried job culture and away from traditional agricultural activities.

04-May-2011 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will participate in the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEFA), in Cape Town from 4-6 May, and will bring to bear its unique knowledge and experience of development issues on the continent.
In particular, the AfDB will participate in a session on the changes taking place in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Bank’s temporary relocation agency office is in Tunis.
03-May-2011 - The African Development Bank and the World Bank pledged USD 1billion to support Tunisia after the presidents of both institutions met in Tunis on 3 May 2011. In this joint action, each bank will provide USD 500 million in budget support to the country.
The AfDB President, Donald Kaberuka, welcomed the visit of his World Bank counterpart, Robert Zoellick, to the Bank’s temporary relocation agency office in the Tunisian capital.
The joint operation is also a sign of stronger cooperation between the two multilateral banks.
02-May-2011 - High-level Public Financial Management (PFM) experts from across Africa are meeting in Tunis this week for a two-day workshop (3 - 4 May 2011) to discuss how to evaluate public financial management reform in Africa. The workshop, which is hosted by the African Development Bank's Operations Evaluation Department (OPEV), is part of the evaluation of PFM reform that the AfDB is undertaking jointly with Danish, Swedish and British Cooperation Agencies (DANIDA, SIDA and DFID).

The award recognized the Bank’s range of exceptional financial services for the development of projects. The awards were announced during the Power and Electricity World Africa 2011 conference, which took place in Cape Town from March 28 through April 1.

20-Apr-2011 - Washington, 20 April, 2011—The Governors’ Consultative Committee of the African Development Bank met in Washington, DC this week to consider the implications of recent events in Abidjan and Tunis for the Bank’s operations.
The African Development Bank has run its operations from its temporary location in the Tunisian capital since relocating there from its Abidjan headquarters in 2003 due to the Ivorian crisis.
20-Apr-2011 - Tunis, Tunisia, 20 April 2011 – The African Development Bank (AfDB) hosted a one-day seminar on “Biomass and Bio-energy Development in Africa” on Tuesday in Tunis, to seek inputs on the subject to feed into its Energy strategy, currently under preparation.
Opening the seminar, AfDB Energy, Environment and Climate Change Department (ONEC) Director, Hela Cheikhrouhou, underscored the importance of the meeting in crafting the Bank’s energy strategy and five-year work plan, noting that bio-energy was a new and controversial idea in Africa.
