The Econonic Conference Must Make Africa’s Voice Heard, says President Donald Kaberuka

23-Nov-2006 - The first annual economic conference of the AfDB went underway on Wednesday in Tunis with the participation of the Tunisian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of African Affairs, Slaheddine Jemmali. In his opening remarks, AfDB Chief Economist, Louis Kasekende, recalled that ongoing reforms in the Bank had resulted in the creation of the Office of the Chief Economist which empowered him to undertake a research process that will make the Bank a knowledge centre.

Reviewing Africa’s Vulnerability

23-Nov-2006 - In a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the AfDB Economic Conference (Tunis, 22-24 November 2006), Professor Patrick Guillaumont of the French-based CERDI, focused on the continent’s economic vulnerability. In his address: Economic Vulnerability, Still a Challenge for African Growth, Professor Guillaumont indicated that structural economic vulnerability was still high in Africa, adding that economic vulnerability was related to growth, poverty reduction and security.

10-Nov-2006 - The AfDB Chief Economist, Louis Kasekende, recently attended an All Africa Regional Forum on Capital Markets in Nairobi, Kenya. The ECA-organized forum, which ran from November 9-10, focused on the theme: "Is a Regional Approach to Capital Markets Development the Best Way forward for Africa?" The forum brought together senior policy-makers, researchers and practitioners with a view to contributing to concrete proposals for fostering regional and/or national capital markets development in Africa.

China-Africa Summit: Mutually Beneficial Cooperation

08-Nov-2006 - President Donald Kaberuka was in Beijing over the weekend and took part in a three-day China-Africa Summit. Attended by more than 40 African Heads of State and Government, the summit resulted in the signing of a joint declaration and an action plan for 2007-2009. Besides the many contracts that were signed, new commitments relating to debt reduction and cooperation in the area of education were also made. The Chinese government also used the Summit to review 50 years of China-Africa relations.

Promoting Transport Infrastructure in Africa

30-Oct-2006 - The weakness in Africa’s transport infrastructure today is striking compared to other developing regions, according to Policy Insights No. 21, an OECD publication derived from the African Economic Outlook 2005/2006 (a joint AfDB/OECD publication). Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for only 3 per cent of the rail transport of developing countries, but has 17 per cent of the population and 7 per cent of the GDP. Under a fifth of its road network is paved, compared to over a quarter in Latin America and over two fifth in South Asia.

Partners’ Meeting on CAR

27-Oct-2006 - A one-day conference on the Central African Republic (CAR), organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), took take place on October 30 in Tunis. The Conference brought together representatives of AfDB member countries and institutions such as the World Bank, the European Commission, UNDP and the IMF. The Conference constitutes an important milestone towards the re-engagement of donors in the CAR.

13-Oct-2006 - Mr. Michel Camdessus, former head of the IMF, Honorary Governor of the Bank of France and Personal Representative of President Jacques Chirac to NEPAD, came to Tunis on Thursday, October 12, at the invitation of President Donald Kaberuka to speak on the crucial issue of rural water supply and sanitation in Africa. "The problem of water in Africa is an issue I feel very passionate about," he said as he launched into an hour-long address on the theme: "Expanding Rural Africa’s Access to Water and Sanitation." 

Stakeholders Discuss Inga Dam Development

06-Oct-2006 - Johannesburg,  6 October 2006 – More than 120 participants from African and regional institutions in the public and private sectors, electricity companies, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the media attended the opening ceremony of the Round Table on the development of hydroelectricity on the Inga River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The meeting was officially opened by the DRC Ambassador in the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Bene M’Poko.

Bilateral discussions on sector specific issues within the extractive industries (infrastructure, oil, gas, water) were also discussed at the meeting.

President Kaberuka Optimistic about AfDB-Portuguese Partnership

08-Sep-2006 - The President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Donald Kaberuka made a historic visit to the Republic of Kenya from 20-23 August 2006. During the course of the visit, he held talks with Cabinet Ministers, Senior Government Officials and a number of Private Sector operators. On the occasion, the President also signed the Host Country Agreement for the opening of the Kenya Field Office which is scheduled to be operational before the end of this year.
