African governments urged to shift policy in the energy sector

28-May-2016 - African governments have been called upon to consider shifting policy in the energy sector by investing in industrialisation and providing subsidies on electricity for people in rural areas who are extremely poor. African Management Services Company (AMSCO) Chairperson Ali Mufuruki said governments should consider making a shift in policy for energy by providing subsidies for poor people to allow them to have access to energy.

The firms, General Electric Africa (GE), Mara Group and Atlas Merchant Capital, will invest in infrastructure projects including energy, rail, among others, in a quest to stimulate the continent’s economic potential through infrastructure development.

Africa should take the lead in reducing industrial emissions, panel hears

28-May-2016 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has challenged Africa to take the lead in implementing strategies to effectively end carbon emissions in the global process of manufacturing goods. AfDB Group Compliance and Safeguards Division Manager Anthony Nyong said, while the continent was the lowest contributor to the total global industrial emissions, it was the most impacted by the effects of air pollution.

President Adesina reaffirms commitment to support African youth entrepreneurship

27-May-2016 - With almost 200 million people between the ages of 15 and 24, the African continent boasts the youngest population in the world. By 2045, that figure is expected to double. The African Development Bank is working on providing youth with the skills, education and jobs they need to secure their future. Available data shows that, although between 10 and 12 million young Africans enter the work force each year, only three million formal jobs are created annually.

AfDB to support Zambia in development of renewable energy projects

27-May-2016 - Zambian Minister of Energy and Water Development, Dora Siliya, announced that her Ministry will in the next fortnight meet African Development Bank (AfDB) Resident Representative Damoni Kitabire in Lusaka, to discuss modalities of supporting local entrepreneurs seeking to develop renewable energy projects. Siliya said her Government is keen on working with the AfDB to empower local entrepreneurs of small and medium enterprises with the capacity to explore avenues of how the power deficit hit country could generate renewable energy.

27-May-2016 - On Monday, May 16, 2016, the African Development Bank (AfDB) participated in the inauguration of the 25 MW first phase of KivuWatt Methane Gas to Power complex located at the Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda, 130 kilometres from the capital Kigali. Lake Kivu, at the boundary of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the world's three known "exploding lakes," presenting a threat as well as an opportunity for local communities.

Participants at a Thursday seminar on the theme “Lighting up Africa: Are Electricity Markets Fit for Purpose?” at the ongoing Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Lusaka, Zambia, agreed that public and private entities have a big role to play in the sector given the lamentable energy deficit on the continent.

AfDB embarks on ambitious plan to ramp up agriculture, create jobs and feed Africa

26-May-2016 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) plans to improve the agriculture sector in Africa by embarking on an ambitious seven-point plan which aims at transforming the sector and be able to empower the small scale farmers and youths. AfDB Director of the Agriculture and Agro-Industry Department, Chiji Ojukwu, said agriculture remained a major source of income in Africa, but its untapped potential had resulted in persistent poverty and deteriorating food security.

AfDB plans to expand its trade finance portfolio across the continent

26-May-2016 - The African Development Bank is planning to expand its trade finance products across the continent in the coming years as it seeks to bridge the existing funding gap to support trade transactions. This would help address critical market demand for trade finance in Africa by providing support for trade in vital economic sectors such as agribusiness and manufacturing. Currently, Africa faces a funding gap of approximately US $120 billion in trade finance.

25-May-2016 - Africa needs to step up investments in skills development and promotion of entrepreneurship to create jobs for young people, African leaders and businesses executives have reaffirmed. Available data shows that although between 10 and 12 million young Africans enter the workforce each year, only three million formal jobs are created annually. Besides, the youth often lack the skills required by employers, despite gains in education access over the past several decades.

Africa-India Partnership Day: India dishes out US $10 bn for Africa’s healthcare and other sectors

25-May-2016 - The Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM) has announced US $10 billion for Africa at the ongoing 51st African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Lusaka. Exim Bank of India Chairman Yaduvendra Mathur said the Government of India has approved a US $10-billion in lines of credit for health and other sectors,  which would be rolled out to the African continent.
