African Economic Outlook 2016 launched in Nigeria

04-Aug-2016 - The 2016 African Economic Outlook (AEO) was launched by the Nigeria Country Office of the African Development Bank at an outreach event held at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. The theme of the 2016 AEO is Sustainable Cities and Structural Transformation. The report looks closely at Africa’s distinctive pathways towards urbanisation, and how this is increasingly shifting economic resources to more productive activities.

AfDB makes USD 9 million equity investment in Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria

04-Aug-2016 - The African Development Bank has approved a USD 9 million equity investment (approximately 12% of the fund’s capitalisation) in the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) to provide expansion capital to agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

ADEA 2017 Triennale: Regional consultation for North Africa underscores importance of Science, Mathematics, and ICT in Africa

03-Aug-2016 - In the lead-up to the 2017 Triennale of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), the Kingdom of Morocco hosted the third regional consultation for the North Africa region on July 13-14 in Rabat. The consultation meeting was part of the framework of preparations for the 2017 Triennale, after regional consultations for Central and West Africa were held respectively on May 30-31 in Gabon and on June 13-14 in Dakar, Senegal.

AfDB stands by South Sudan and approves €6-million grant for Resilient Water Project for Improved Livelihoods in Juba

02-Aug-2016 - The livelihoods of some 230,000 people in Juba, South Sudan, will be improved thanks to a key water project approved on July 14, 2016 by the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) in the form of a grant of €6.3 million. The project will also strengthen efficient utility operations, private sector participation and women’s empowerment.

SEFA grants US $1 million to promote green mini-grids in Niger

02-Aug-2016 - In July 2016, the Republic of Niger was awarded a US $994,270 grant from the African Development Bank-hosted Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) to promote green mini-grids (GMGs) and pave the way for private investments in this sub-sector.

African Water Facility: Boosting hydropower and irrigation in Tanzania

02-Aug-2016 - Tanzania is expected to benefit from a boost in hydropower generation and irrigation development thanks to a new study financed by the African Water Facility (AWF). This €2-million grant will help the government of Tanzania launch the pre-feasibility study of a multipurpose dam, irrigation and hydropower project in Kikonge (southwest).

FAWE-ADEA competition rewards efforts to promote girls’ education in Africa

21-Jul-2016 - An award ceremony for top significant change stories following a competition to identify innovative projects that have contributed to advancing girls’ education in Africa was held in Nairobi recently. The July 7, 2016 event was organised by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) in partnership with the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). The three most innovative stories were selected based on the criteria of access to education, retention and performance.
