ECOWAS urged to strengthen regional integration by reducing non-tariff barriers to trade

14-Jun-2016 - Trade experts have called on member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to step up efforts to minimise burdens that non-tariff measures (NTMs) place on businesses in the region. At a June 14-15, 2016 meeting in Côte d’Ivoire’s economic capital, Abidjan, the experts highlighted that countries needed to diversify and increase their portfolio of exports, set up trade obstacle alert mechanisms, and standardise technical and regulatory requirements.

ITC, AfDB to hold roundtable on non-tariff measures affecting regional trade in ECOWAS

AfDB approves four risk participations under its Private Sector Credit Enhancement Facility

10-Jun-2016 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional arm of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 approved four operations amounting to close to US $45 million in lines of credit to African financial institutions under its Private Sector Credit Enhancement Facility (PSF). The four operations are credit risk participations in lines of credit of the African Development Bank to financial institutions in East, North, West and Southern Africa.

AfDB approves USD 150-million line of credit to Nigeria’s United Bank for Africa Plc

08-Jun-2016 - La Banque africaine de développement (BAD) a approuvé ce jour, un prêt de 88,85 millions d’euros pour financer le projet d’amélioration de la qualité et du service de l’eau potable au Maroc. Le projet vise à renforcer et à sécuriser l’approvisionnement en eau potable de plusieurs agglomérations, notamment Bouznika, Ben Slimane, Youssoufia et Safi et à améliorer la qualité d’eau au niveau du système de Bouregreg (aération artificielle au niveau du barrage SMBA et ozonation au niveau de la station de traitement existante).

Bank strengthens Nordic partnerships – “our priorities are aligned”

06-Jun-2016 - The African Development Bank strengthens its longstanding partnerships with the Nordic countries this week as a high-level delegation, led by its President, Akinwumi Adesina, visits Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden. "The Nordic countries are strong supporters of the African Development Bank, and they also contribute significantly to the African Development Fund. The Bank's strategies are perfectly in line with the Nordic countries' priorities. Together, we are striving to reduce poverty in Africa," said Adesina.

The Gambia awarded US $1.5 million to undertake a sweeping Strategic Program for Climate Resilience

01-Jun-2016 - With support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), The Gambia has been granted US $1.5 million under the Climate Investment Funds’ Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (CIF PPCR) to prepare a national Strategic Program for Climate Resilience (SPCR). Through the SPCR, the country will develop a double-edged set of solutions for its climate vulnerability, identifying programs to implement resilience actions while at the same time reducing barriers that exacerbate climate vulnerability.

AfDB, Malawi ink US $1-million humanitarian assistance grant agreement

31-May-2016 - The African Development Bank and the Government of the Republic of Malawi signed a grant agreement for a humanitarian emergency assistance to mitigate the effects of the 2015 floods and El Niño in 2016. The signing ceremony was hosted by Kapil Kapoor, AfDB Acting Vice-President, Sector Operations, during the institution’s Annual Meetings held in Lusaka, Zambia.

African Risk Capacity and AfDB sign MOU to enable African countries to respond to extreme weather events and natural disasters

27-May-2016 - The African Risk Capacity has taken major steps towards its goal of providing US $2 billion worth of annual climate disaster coverage to Africa’s most vulnerable populations. ARC signed a Letter of Intent and a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Conférence Inter-Africaine des Marchés d’Assurance (CIMA), respectively, on Wednesday, May 25 after a high-level panel on Climate Disaster Risk Financing at the AfDB’s Annual Meetings in Lusaka, Zambia.

Rwanda inaugurates the KivuWatt Methane Gas to Power Project with AfDB support converting a potential risk into an economic reality

27-May-2016 - On Monday, May 16, 2016, the African Development Bank (AfDB) participated in the inauguration of the 25 MW first phase of KivuWatt Methane Gas to Power complex located at the Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda, 130 kilometres from the capital Kigali. Lake Kivu, at the boundary of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the world's three known "exploding lakes," presenting a threat as well as an opportunity for local communities.
