Road improvement and trade facilitation: AfDB and Guinea sign US $50 million in loan agreements

13-Feb-2015 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group and Guinea on February 12 in Abidjan signed US $50 million in loan agreements to finance a road improvement and trade facilitation project. This Road Improvement and Transport Facilitation Project in the Mano River Union includes the tarring of 276.35 kilometres of roads in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia. It also provides for the building and equipment of two juxtaposed border checkpoints and the development of social infrastructure such as schools, health centres and bus stations.

AfDB awards US$1 million emergency relief assistance for drought victims in Somalia

12-Feb-2015 - The African Development Bank’s new Strategy for Addressing Fragility and Building Resilience for the period 2014–2019 aims to place the Bank at the centre of Africa’s efforts to pave the way for a more resilient and inclusive development trajectory. Enhancing the Bank’s leadership role in policy dialogue, partnerships and advocacy around issues of fragility is critical in this process.

Africa launches platform to enhance collaboration between countries for the delivery of quality Early Childhood Development programs

10-Feb-2015 - A regional platform to improve the provision of quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs in Africa was launched on Monday, February 9 in Kigali, Rwanda, during the Ministerial Conference for Sub-Saharan Africa on Education Post-2015. The Inter-Country Quality Node on Early Childhood Development (ICQN-ECD) is created at the instigation of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Higher Education and Scientific Research of Mauritius, which has taken the responsibility of its leadership.

AfDB issues 1.375% USD 1 billion global benchmark due 12 February 2020

06-Feb-2015 - On Thursday, February 5, 2015, the African Development Bank (AfDB) successfully launched and priced a new 1 billion 5-year US dollar global benchmark due February 12, 2020. This is the AfDB’s first US dollar global benchmark of the year. The transaction was announced on Wednesday, February 4 at 2:15 p.m. London time with initial price thoughts of midswaps +2 basis points area.

Access to water and sanitation: AfDB, partners advocate more funding for least advanced countries

AfDB Board approves revised Resolution establishing Bank’s Independent Review Mechanism

30-Jan-2015 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) approved on Wednesday, January 28 in Abidjan the revised version of the Resolution establishing the Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) and its operating rules and procedures. These procedures simplify the process of filing complaints from persons adversely affected by a project or programme financed by the Bank. They also enable the IRM to provide advisory service to the Bank.

Sustainable Energy for All Africa Hub gathers partners in Abidjan to advance initiative across the continent

29-Jan-2015 - The African Development Bank (AfDB), as host of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Africa Hub, organized on January 26 and 27 a workshop in Abidjan with representatives of African countries and partner institutions. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Global Facilitation Team headed by Kandeh Yumkella, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on SE4ALL. Since its launch, more than 90 Governments from around the world have formally engaged with the initiative, including 43 African countries.

AfDB committed to Africa’s transformation through improved agriculture

29-Jan-2015 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) expressed on Tuesday, January 27 its support to the African Union (AU) in implementing Africa’s commitments for an accelerated agricultural growth and transformation. Speaking at a high-level event during the 24th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, AfDB Vice-President Aly Abou-Sabaa said the AfDB would bring, with other partners, an innovative financial support to the implementation of the AU Strategy and Roadmap for the realisation of 2014 Malabo commitments on agriculture and food security.

AfDB and Niger sign two agreements totalling $61 million to reduce food insecurity

27-Jan-2015 - The African Development Bank Group is firmly committed to ensuring food security in the Sahel region, especially in Niger, to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations in this region. On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, the Bank and the Government of Niger signed two agreements at the Bank's Abidjan headquarters. The first signature was for $42 million – $21 million in loans and $21 million as a grant. The second agreement relates to a grant equivalent of approximately $19.2 million.

Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa to support a 72 MW Solar PV Power Plant in Cameroon

23-Jan-2015 - The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) approved at the end of 2014 a USD 777,000 preparation grant for JCM Greenquest Solar Corporation to support the development of a 72 MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power plant as the first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Cameroon. The SEFA grant will finance environmental and social impact assessments and the cost related to the technical, legal and financial advisory services.

AWF to help tackle rising sanitation demands in the Seychelles

20-Jan-2015 - The African Water Facility (AWF) announced on January 19, 2015 that it has approved a €1.07-million grant for the development of an Integrated Comprehensive Sanitation Plan for the Seychelles. The 10-year plan will follow an integrated approach, looking at the synergies with related sectors such as waste, energy, water supply and stormwater. It will also promote innovative water re-use technologies.

AfDB sends mission to Burkina Faso to support transition

19-Jan-2015 - A delegation from the African Development Bank will conduct a mission to Burkina Faso from 18 to 24 January 2015, to hold talks with senior transitional authorities. This mission, led by Sibry Tapsoba, Director of the AfDB Transition Support Department, will visit Burkina Faso as part of the transition process the country is undertaking after the fall of president Blaise Compaoré on October 31, 2014.

Fund for African Private Sector Assistance to support micro, small and medium enterprises in the Seychelles

13-Jan-2015 - A US $1 million Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA) grant agreement to finance the Seychelles MSME Development Project, was signed on Monday, December 29, 2014, between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Seychelles. Pierre Laporte, Minister of Finance, Trade and Investment, and Gabriel Negatu, Regional Director for East Africa, signed on behalf of the Government of Seychelles and the Bank, respectively.
