14-Feb-2014 - Many in East Africa still recall the devastating drought of 2009. In Kenya alone, it left nearly 80% of cattle dead in some parts of the country. Whether linked to the effects of global warming or not, this drought is estimated to have cost the Kenyan economy about US $12 billion. Its impact was most pronounced in the arid and semi-arid areas of the country.

African Development Bank pledges $1 million to fight Ebola in Sierra Leone

14-Feb-2014 - On Wednesday, September 17, 2014 the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed a three-way agreement with the Government of Sierra Leone and the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide US $1 million. This is part of an overall pledge of $4 million which the AfDB will give to the four countries affected by the Ebola virus. The money will help in the hiring and training of healthcare professionals and the purchasing of medical supplies and equipment to contain the spread of the virus.

AfDB issues its first US dollar Global benchmark for 2014

12-Feb-2014 - On Wednesday, March 5, 2014 the African Development Bank (AfDB) successfully issued a new a USD 1 billion three-year global benchmark due on May 15, 2017. The benchmark was announced on March 4, 2014 for execution the following day. Overnight, the joint lead managers gathered more than USD 1.5 billion in expressions of interest, a clear demonstration of the high level of attention the transaction was drawing on the market.
