Statistics at the Service of Development

Bilateral and multilateral donors, sub-regional and international organizations supporting statistical development in Africa as well as Directors of regional member countries National Statistical Offices and Representatives of key statistics users, met in Addis Ababa from 9-10 February, 2006 to review and endorse the Reference Regional Strategic Framework for Capacity Building in Africa (RRSF).

The RRSF aims to contribute to improved development outcomes and good governance by guiding and accelerating sustainable statistical capacity building activities in Africa.  In a statement presented on behalf of Mr. Philibert Afrika, Acting Vice-President in charge of Policy Planning and Research, Mr. Janvier Litse, ADB Group Director for Planning and Budgeting, noted that in the area of statistics, the Bank’s activities have the general objective of assisting African countries obtain reliable and timely data necessary for research and development work.

The Bank played a key role in the design of the Strategic Framework and was assigned the leading responsibility in its coordination, implementation, monitoring and reporting, along with ECA.

The meeting in particular commended the Bank for its leadership role in statistical capacity building activities in Africa and requested the Bank to continue and further increase its support in view of the dire statistical challenges facing the continent.

The meeting was organized jointly by AfDB, ECA, Paris21 and the World Bank.
