The African Development Bank in conjunction with four partner institutions: the Southern African Development Community- Development Finance Resource Centre (SADC-DFRC), the Joint Africa Institute (JAI), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) organized the SADC-Development Finance Institutions Risk Management Training Seminar in Cape Town from November 15 to 19, 2004.
The opening session of the workshop sponsored by the Japanese government and involving 23 development finance institutions in the SADC region (SADC-DFIs), and three regional institutions – the East African Development Bank (EADB), the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) and the PTA Trade and Development Bank, was held at Hotel Vendome in Cape Town on November 15, 2004.
The SADC-DFIs Risk Management Seminar is planned as an important risk management forum for key professionals in national DFIs of the SADC region. The overall goal is to put DFIs in a position to meet its clients needs better than in the past through the development of innovative risk management tools, so that also Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs) can benefit from loans and better advisory services
During the opening session, chaired by Tim Turner, director of the ADB’s Financial Management department, Michael Bauer, director of the JAI, Dr Rosalind Thomas, CEO of the SADC-DFRC and M. Katutoshi Ohori, observer from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) reiterated the close relationship between sound Risk Management tools in regional development finance institutions and sustainable economic growth. In this aim in mind, private sector stakeholders’ participation, such as Deloitte & Touche and Standards & Poors, is also crucial.
M. Ohori, representing the Japanese government, underlined the involvement of Japan and of ADB Group President Omar Kabbaj, who recently agreed on a memorandum of understanding regarding the partnership with regional development banks and the transfer of development experience from Asia to Africa.
The SADC-DFIs Risk Management Seminar is immediately preceding the 4th Annual Multilateral Development Banks Risk Management Forum, hosted by the ADB in Cape Town from November 22-24, 2004.
