In concluding his three-day official visit to Senegal at the invitation of President Macky Sall, AfDB President Donald Kaberuka said, “I have benefitted from the analysis of President Macky Sall regarding AfDB-Senegal cooperation and topics related to regional integration and international cooperation.” The visit took place from September 8-11.

During the audience granted to the AfDB delegation, President Macky Sall said he was satisfied with the excellent cooperation between Senegal and the AfDB: “I am proud of the good work being done by our institution. And I would like to congratulate President Kaberuka on the good results obtained. I would like to restate our support.”

Before meeting with President Macky Sall, President Kaberuka had a working session with Mr. Amadou Kane, Senegal’s Economic and Finance Minister, with whom he reviewed AfDB-Senegal cooperation. “We are satisfied with the state of our cooperation with the African Development Bank,” said Minister Amadou Kane.

During his stay in Senegal, the AfDB President visited the Dakar-Diamniadio Toll Highway project in the company of the Infrastructure Minister, Mor Ngom. The project, which will help ease traffic congestion in the suburbs of Dakar, was financed by the AfDB under a public-private partnership. It is, to date, the first highway project structured in this form in Sub-Saharan Africa outside South Africa. “Senegal hails the efforts made by the AfDB to support Senegal’s development to enable the country to develop quality infrastructure,” Mr. Mor Ngom said.

The AfDB delegation also had a working session with technical and financial partners to discuss ways and means of improving cooperation and results-based coordination. Mr. Kaberuka said he was satisfied with the quality of dialogue between technical and financial partners.

On the sidelines of his official visit to Senegal, the AfDB President met with the AfDB Resident Representative and program officers who are based in the West African sub-region.

Several meetings and events also marked the AfDB delegation’s visit to Senegal, such as meetings with the press and government officials, including Tourism and Culture Minister Youssou Ndour, Energy Minister Aly Ngouille Ndiaye, Fisheries and Maritime Economy Minister Pape Diouf, and other high-level personalities.

The AfDB delegation included, among others, Operations Vice-President Zondo Sakala; Special Advisor to the President Youssouf Ouedraogo, Operations Director for the Western Region Franck Perrault, and Senegal Field Office Resident Representative Leila Mokadem.

The Bank’s commitment in Senegal stands at some 857 billion CFA francs. “I intend to strengthen this cooperation by financing sectors that are likely to facilitate youth and women employment, President Kaberuka said. “On September 10, we approved one million dollars in emergency food aid for Senegal. This will help to alleviate the suffering of those affected by severe flooding that the country has recently experienced.”

The AfDB has financed many projects in Senegal, especially the Dakar-Bamako road corridor, the Blaise Diagne Airport, and the Kounoune and Sendou power plants, as well as livestock and small rural irrigation projects. The financing for the bridge over the Gambia has been approved by the AfDB Board. The AfDB will also be involved in the promotion of a green economy in the rehabilitation of Lake Guiers.
