The Econonic Conference Must Make Africa’s Voice Heard, says President Donald Kaberuka
The first annual economic conference of the AfDB went underway on Wednesday in Tunis with the participation of the Tunisian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of African Affairs, Slaheddine Jemmali. In his opening remarks, AfDB Chief Economist, Louis Kasekende, recalled that ongoing reforms in the Bank had resulted in the creation of the Office of the Chief Economist which empowered him to undertake a research process that will make the Bank a knowledge centre. To this end, he found that the conference was a step in the right direction, but pointed out that the Bank’s capacity to undertake research and generate knowledge relevant to its various operations is constrained by the institution’s resources. He indicated that "we live in a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by knowledge that is available in a variety of forms and from different sources," he said, adding that "through partnerships and networking, we can tap into relevant research on topics of interest conducted by many in this room."
