Call for Papers - African Economic Conference 2016: “Feeding Africa: Towards Agro-Allied Industrialization for Inclusive Growth”

01-Jun-2016 - Jointly organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Economic Conference (AEC) 2016 will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, from December 5 to 7, 2016 under the following theme: "Feeding Africa: Towards Agro-Allied Industrialization for Inclusive Growth.

The Gambia awarded US $1.5 million to undertake a sweeping Strategic Program for Climate Resilience

01-Jun-2016 - With support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), The Gambia has been granted US $1.5 million under the Climate Investment Funds’ Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (CIF PPCR) to prepare a national Strategic Program for Climate Resilience (SPCR). Through the SPCR, the country will develop a double-edged set of solutions for its climate vulnerability, identifying programs to implement resilience actions while at the same time reducing barriers that exacerbate climate vulnerability.

AfDB, Malawi ink US $1-million humanitarian assistance grant agreement

31-May-2016 - The African Development Bank and the Government of the Republic of Malawi signed a grant agreement for a humanitarian emergency assistance to mitigate the effects of the 2015 floods and El Niño in 2016. The signing ceremony was hosted by Kapil Kapoor, AfDB Acting Vice-President, Sector Operations, during the institution’s Annual Meetings held in Lusaka, Zambia.

Bank Group hosts 7th Debt Management Facility Stakeholders’ Forum

31-May-2016 - The African Development Bank Group is hosting the 7th Debt Management Facility (DMF) Stakeholders’ Forum on May 30-31, 2016 in Lusaka, Zambia, on the heels of the Bank’s 2016 Annual Meetings. More than 100 delegates are attending the forum. The Bank’s delegation, comprising colleagues from various departments, is led by Charles Boamah, Vice-President, Finance.

Partnership to address infrastructure challenges in Africa

28-May-2016 - Three international firms have partnered to help address infrastructure challenges in Africa through investments in equity projects. The firms, General Electric Africa (GE), Mara Group and Atlas Merchant Capital, will invest in infrastructure projects including energy, rail, among others, in a quest to stimulate the continent’s economic potential through infrastructure development.

Japanese investors and partners recognize huge potential of African continent

28-May-2016 - The challenges facing Africa shouldn’t be recognized with pessimism, but must be seen as investment opportunities, says the Head of the Africa Development Bank’s (AfDB) External Representative Office for Asia, Tadashi Yokoyama. Speaking at the “Japan-AfDB Forum: Energy Access and Quality Infrastructure in Africa – Towards TICAD VI” at the AfDB Annual Meetings in Lusaka, Zambia, on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Yokoyama said the potential of Africa is enormous.

Africa should take the lead in reducing industrial emissions, panel hears

28-May-2016 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has challenged Africa to take the lead in implementing strategies to effectively end carbon emissions in the global process of manufacturing goods. AfDB Group Compliance and Safeguards Division Manager Anthony Nyong said, while the continent was the lowest contributor to the total global industrial emissions, it was the most impacted by the effects of air pollution.

AfDB reaffirms supporting climate resilient and low-carbon development in Africa

28-May-2016 - The African Development Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to mobilize resources to help African countries adopt and mitigate climate change. This commitment underpins its 2013-2022 Strategy promoting inclusive and green growth in Africa. Almost US $7 billion has been committed to projects in support of climate resilient and low-carbon development in the past four years.

African governments urged to shift policy in the energy sector

28-May-2016 - African governments have been called upon to consider shifting policy in the energy sector by investing in industrialisation and providing subsidies on electricity for people in rural areas who are extremely poor. African Management Services Company (AMSCO) Chairperson Ali Mufuruki said governments should consider making a shift in policy for energy by providing subsidies for poor people to allow them to have access to energy.

Rwanda inaugurates the KivuWatt Methane Gas to Power Project with AfDB support converting a potential risk into an economic reality

27-May-2016 - On Monday, May 16, 2016, the African Development Bank (AfDB) participated in the inauguration of the 25 MW first phase of KivuWatt Methane Gas to Power complex located at the Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda, 130 kilometres from the capital Kigali. Lake Kivu, at the boundary of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the world's three known "exploding lakes," presenting a threat as well as an opportunity for local communities.

Partnership on Illicit Finance Launch Event

27-May-2016 - Members of the Partnership on Illicit Finance (PIF) met alongside the African Development Bank at the Bank’s Annual Meetings in Lusaka, Zambia, to publish national action plans to combat illicit finance, review member countries’ priorities for addressing illicit finance stemming from corruption and other criminal activities, and share experiences with countries interested in joining the Partnership.

African Risk Capacity and AfDB sign MOU to enable African countries to respond to extreme weather events and natural disasters

27-May-2016 - The African Risk Capacity has taken major steps towards its goal of providing US $2 billion worth of annual climate disaster coverage to Africa’s most vulnerable populations. ARC signed a Letter of Intent and a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Conférence Inter-Africaine des Marchés d’Assurance (CIMA), respectively, on Wednesday, May 25 after a high-level panel on Climate Disaster Risk Financing at the AfDB’s Annual Meetings in Lusaka, Zambia.   

More funding for jobs and entrepreneurship for African women: The regional Gender Equality Community of Practice discusses positive discrimination

27-May-2016 - On the fifth day of the African Development Bank’s 2016 Annual Meetings, which are being held in Lusaka, Zambia, from May 23 to 27, around 10 African Finance Ministers – in their capacity as Governors of the AfDB Group – met with members of the regional Gender Equality Community of Practice to discuss funding issues in relation to gender equality. The discussions were moderated by the President of the AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina.

27-May-2016 - Les opérateurs de l’énergie solaire (BBOX, Mobisol, African Garantee Fund etc.) ont édifié, au 4e jour des Assemblées annuelles de la Banque africaine de développement (BAD) à Lusaka, les participants au Forum : « Financement de la Révolution solaire en Afrique » sur les progrès réalisés dans les projets d’installations solaires en Afrique orientale et australe. Ceux-ci concernent  notamment ceux du Rwanda, de l’Afrique du Sud, de la Tanzanie et  du Kenya.
