United States urges more African countries to join ‘Partnership against Illicit Finance’

27-May-2016 - More African countries should sign-up to the ‘Partnership on Illicit Finance’ (PIF), an initiative formed in July 2014 during the US-Africa leaders’ summit. That was the call made Thursday by Marisa Lago, Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Development in the US Treasury, while speaking as a panelist in a session at the ongoing African Development Bank Annual Meetings in Lusaka.

27-May-2016 - Les opérateurs de l’énergie solaire (BBOX, Mobisol, African Garantee Fund etc.) ont édifié, au 4e jour des Assemblées annuelles de la Banque africaine de développement (BAD) à Lusaka, les participants au Forum : « Financement de la Révolution solaire en Afrique » sur les progrès réalisés dans les projets d’installations solaires en Afrique orientale et australe. Ceux-ci concernent  notamment ceux du Rwanda, de l’Afrique du Sud, de la Tanzanie et  du Kenya.

President Adesina reaffirms commitment to support African youth entrepreneurship

27-May-2016 - With almost 200 million people between the ages of 15 and 24, the African continent boasts the youngest population in the world. By 2045, that figure is expected to double. The African Development Bank is working on providing youth with the skills, education and jobs they need to secure their future. Available data shows that, although between 10 and 12 million young Africans enter the work force each year, only three million formal jobs are created annually.

10th African Banker Awards continue to celebrate excellence in banking and finance on the continent

26-May-2016 - Cameroon is a big winner at this year’s African Banker Awards, while Morocco’s Attijariwafa Bank scoops prestigious Bank of the Year Award and GT Bank CEO Segun Agbaje is recognised as Africa’s Banker of the Year. Other winners include South Africa’s Daniel Matjila, who heads PIC, and Cameroonian economist and banker, Paul Fokam, who wins the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Participants at a Thursday seminar on the theme “Lighting up Africa: Are Electricity Markets Fit for Purpose?” at the ongoing Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Lusaka, Zambia, agreed that public and private entities have a big role to play in the sector given the lamentable energy deficit on the continent.

26-May-2016 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) plans to improve the agriculture sector in Africa by embarking on an ambitious seven-point plan which aims at transforming the sector and be able to empower the small scale farmers and youths. AfDB Director of the Agriculture and Agro-Industry Department, Chiji Ojukwu, said agriculture remained a major source of income in Africa, but its untapped potential had resulted in persistent poverty and deteriorating food security.

AfDB plans to expand its trade finance portfolio across the continent

26-May-2016 - The African Development Bank is planning to expand its trade finance products across the continent in the coming years as it seeks to bridge the existing funding gap to support trade transactions. This would help address critical market demand for trade finance in Africa by providing support for trade in vital economic sectors such as agribusiness and manufacturing. Currently, Africa faces a funding gap of approximately US $120 billion in trade finance.

25-May-2016 - Despite the difficult and challenging global economic situation, African countries achieved considerable economic progress in 2015, registering a 3.6% average GDP growth during the year when the best performers in developed countries hardly reached 2%. Africa also accounts for five of the world’s fastest-growing economies with Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania registering growth rates of seven percent or more.

Exim Bank of India Chairman Yaduvendra Mathur said the Government of India has approved a US $10-billion in lines of credit for health and other sectors,  which would be rolled out to the African continent.
