At Paris Fashion Week, Ghanaian entrepreneur Roberta Annan launches €100 m Impact Fund to invest in Africa’s creative industries

07-Oct-2021 - Ghanaian businesswoman and entrepreneur Roberta Annan earlier this week launched a €100 million fund to channel investment into small and medium African creative and fashion enterprises. The Impact Fund for African Creatives (IFFAC),will award grants of up to €50,000 to selected projects to accelerate development of the continent’s creative sector.

African Development Bank debars Express Automation Limited for 36 months for fraudulent practices

07-Oct-2021 - The African Development Bank Group, on 7 October 2021, announces the 36-month debarment of Express Automation Limited with effect from 18 August 2021. Express Automation Limited is a limited liability company registered under the laws of the Republic of Kenya. An investigation conducted by the Bank’s Office of Integrity and Anti-Corruption established that Express Automation Limited engaged in fraudulent practices during a tender for the Technical Security Upgrade to the Bank’s Eastern Africa Regional Centre.

Appointment of the General Counsel and Director of the Legal Service Department, Dr. Souley Amadou

06-Oct-2021 - The African Development Bank is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Souley Amadou as General Counsel and Director of the Legal Service Department, effective 1st November 2021. A transactional lawyer, Dr. Souley Amadou has over 25 years of substantive legal work experience, including over 20 years spent at the African Development Bank Group. He also assumed the role of Acting Corporate Secretary & General Counsel of Africa50 from 2015 to 2018.

Adesina has said that a concerted effort to change the narrative on Africa in the United States is necessary to attract increased investments into the continent. He said the need for advocacy in the United States made having an African Development Bank office in Washington a matter of importance, and that he would be pursuing approval with the Board of the African Development Bank Group.

05-Oct-2021 - An African Development Bank delegation led by Abdul Kamara, Deputy Director General of the East Africa Region, is taking part in a validation workshop for the African Union's (UA) second Biennial Continental Report on Agenda 2063, held from 20 September to 6 October in the Zimbabwean capital Harare. The aim of this meeting is to monitor, examine and consolidate national reports on Agenda 2063 for preparation and finalization of the report, which will be presented to Member States and the next AU summit, in February 2022.

Germany commits €100 million to SEFA to unlock private investment in renewable energy

30-Sep-2021 - The German government will contribute €100 million to the African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), affirming its commitment to efforts to tap Africa’s renewable energy potential and drive its transition to clean energy sources. The announcement came during the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Energy, held in New York on 24 September as part of the UN General Assembly.  

African Development Bank debars Rockey Africa Limited, its affiliates and CEO for fraudulent practices

29-Sep-2021 - The African Development Bank Group, on 29 September 2021, announces the 18-month debarment of Rockey Africa Limited and its affiliates including Aerospace Aviation, Eva-Top Agencies, Sony Commercial Agencies, Beta Trading Company and Madujey Global Services. The Bank has also debarred for 24 months, Mr. Robert Kamau Wachira, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Rockey Africa Limited. The debarments take effect from 5 August 2021. All six companies are registered under the laws of the Republic of Kenya.

Africa Resilience Forum 2021: Facing the ‘hydra-head challenges of Covid-19, conflict and climate’

28-Sep-2021 - The fourth edition of the Africa Resilience Forum opened on Tuesday, as the continent’s most vulnerable communities confront the triple challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, conflict and climate change. An estimated 39 million Africans could slip into extreme poverty this year, as a result of the pandemic. At the same time, countries are facing higher fiscal costs, reducing capacity for the critical investments required to deliver on ambitions such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

President Biden’s Special Envoy for Climate, Secretary John Kerry Meets African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina on Climate Financing for Africa

26-Sep-2021 - US President Joseph Biden’s special envoy for Climate, Secretary John Kerry, and the African Development Bank President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina have held a virtual meeting ahead of November’s global climate summit, COP26.  They discussed Africa’s climate emergency, preparations for COP26 and how the US can help close the annual $27 billion climate finance gap for Africa. Dr. Adesina praised President Biden’s bold announcement doubling the US government’s contribution to climate finance to $11.4 billion a year by 2024.

25-Sep-2021 - “The world has the resources to end hunger,” African Development Bank president Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina said in a message on the first day of the United Nations Food Systems Summit. Convened by UN Secretary General António Guterres, the event is billed by its organisers as “a historic opportunity to empower all people to leverage the power of food systems to drive our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and get us back on track to achieve all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.”

Uganda launches last-mile connectivity to increase electricity access to rural communities

24-Sep-2021 - Representatives of UMEME Ltd hand over electricity connection accessories to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa. Looking on (right) is the African Development Bank's Country Manager for Uganda, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan. With support from the African Development Bank and other partners, the Ugandan government has launched the last-mile connectivity component under the Uganda Rural Electricity Access Project in Iganga in the eastern Luuka District.
