Rwanda - Sustainable Woodland Management and Natural Forest Restoration Project - PCR

The project’s objective was relevant to the country’s strategic objectives in forestry. These include increasing and diversifying national forest and agroforestry resources; conserving and sustainably rehabilitating forest and agroforestry resources; assessing the contribution of goods and services provided by the forestry sector to the national economy; lastly, developing an agriculture sector that seeks to preserve the environment and natural resources. PGReF is fully aligned to the national forestry policy and strategy.

African Legal Support Facility supports $200 million energy plant in Rwanda

The African Legal Support Facility has provided advisory services support to the Government of Rwanda for the negotiation of its deal with Symbion Power to develop a $200-million-dollar energy plant by Lake Kivu in Rwanda, signed on 29 March 2019. The energy plant is expected to generate an additional 56 MW of electricity for Rwanda, marking a significant step in Rwanda’s efforts to increase its installed power generation capacity by 291MW to 512MW by 2024. Regional Economic Outlook 2019 - East Africa

East Africa comprises 13 countries that are diverse in many aspects (box 1). In 2018, real GDP in the region grew by an estimated 5.7 percent, slightly less than the 5.9 percent in 2017 and the highest among African regions (figure 1). Economic growth is projected to remain strong, at 5.9 percent in 2019 and 6.1 percent in 2020. The regional average masks substantial variation across countries. Estimated GDP growth in 2018 ranged from –3.8 percent (contraction) in South Sudan to 7.2 percent in Rwanda and 7.7 percent in Ethiopia.
