Regional Development Banks Heads discuss common challenges, opportunities to build back better post COVID-19

Heads of four regional development banks (RDBs) meeting virtually on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to working together to build back better in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting was hosted by African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, the outgoing chair of the group. He was joined by Odile Renaud-Basso, new President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); Masatsugu Asakwa, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Mauricio Claver Carone the new president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

African countries must strengthen governance and international partnerships, while also making better use of abundant natural resources to accelerate economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 period, the International Forum on African Leadership heard.

“We owe it to posterity to leverage the partnerships that we have and forge new ones to expedite the resurgence of our economies,” said Lazarus Chakweras, President of the Republic of Malawi, during the forum, which was organized by African Leadership Magazine on Friday 5 December.
