AfDB, Japan Grant USD 989,000 Technical Assistance to Mauritania’s Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière

Tunis, 22 October, 2009 —The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan have approved a grant of USD 989,000 to la Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) of Mauritania to be paid from the Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA). The Technical Assistance contribution from FAPA, which comprises over 50% of the overall TA package, will enhance SNIM’s institutional and operational capacities to implement the Environmental and Social Management Plan for the Guelbs II Expansion Project financed in part by the AfDB.

Cape Verde Attains Middle Income Country Status

Tunis, 28 October 2009 – The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved Cape Verde’s 2009-2012 Country Strategy Paper (CSP), and elevated the country to Middle Income Country (MIC) Status, which entitles it to access resources from the Bank Group’s non-concessional and concessional windows.

The 2009-2012 CSP is set within the dual framework of the country’s Economic Transformation Strategy (STE) – a long-term structural vision and its 2008-2011 Second Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP-II).

ADF supports Burkina Faso to halt desert progression

In this aim, ADF has approved a loan of UA6.4 million (US$ 9.40 million) to finance the Community Investment Project for Agricultural Fertility (PICOFA). The project area, the Eastern region of Burkina, which is one of the poorest parts of the country, is confronted with this phenomenon of accelerated degradation of soils, natural resources and biodiversity in general, a phenomenon exacerbated in the last decades by the demographic growth impact. Over the time, this trend could cause poverty and social conflicts intensification.

85 million US Dollars for a Road Project in Ghana

Tunis, 15 October 2009 – The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group Board of Directors has approved a UA 53.59 million African Development Fund (ADF) loan, equivalent to US$ 85 million, to finance the Awoshie-Pokuase Road and Community Development Project in Ghana.

The project is designed to provide integrated solutions to urban development in Accra, one of the main challenges of Ghana. With more than 40 percent of its population living in urban areas, Ghana is one of the most urbanized countries in Africa.

DRC Gets US$ 74.69 Million Grant for Roads Rehabilitation

Tunis, 29 December 2005 – The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has signed an agreement with the African Development Bank Group for a grant of 52.45 million Units of Account (UA*), about US$ 74.69 million to finance the Nsele-Lufimi and Kwango-Kenge Roads Rehabilitation Project.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the embassy of the DRC in Tunis, Mrs. Lukusa Kayembe N’Kaya Genevieve and the Bank Group’s Acting Vice President for West and Central Operations, Mr. Jaouad Mohammed Gharbi, signed the protocol agreement in Tunis on Thursday.
