AfDB Helps Morocco Improve Airport Efficiency

Tunis, 16 April 2009 –  The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will help to improve the operational efficiency of airports across Morocco with a loan of € 240 million approved on Wednesday in Tunis by the institution’s Board.

This project involves upgrading facilities at the Casablanca, Fez, Agadir, Marrakech and Rabat, airports, which handle the bulk of air traffic to and from Morocco.

ADF Approves US$ 186 Million Funding for Six Projects in Regional member Countries

Tunis, 27 October 2006 – The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional window of the African Development Bank (ADB) Group, approved on Friday in Tunis, loans and grants amounting to 125.95 million Units of Account (UA*), equivalent to US$ 186 million for the financing of projects across the continent.

Mozambique will receive US$133 million, made up of a loan of US$ 88 million for the financing of its second poverty reduction support programme (PARPA II) and another loan of US$44 million for road construction and rehabilitation.

AfDB Approves US$ 2 million Emergency Humanitarian Assistance to Djibouti, Mozambique, Togo and Zambia

Tunis, 6 April 2009–The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved emergency humanitarian assistance grants of US$ 500,000 each to Djibouti, Mozambique, Togo and Zambia, to enable the countries provide immediate relief to victims of recent natural disasters such as floods and drought.

Djibouti will use the assistance to provide food and other support to 55,000 drought victims in five districts (Arta, Ali Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjourah and Obock.) as well as 6,000 people at the country’s Ali Addeh refugee camp.

Morocco–AfDB Approves €75 Million Loan for Education Programme

Tunis, 31 March 2009–The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will support Morocco’s efforts to revamp its education system with a €75 Million loan approved by the institution’s Board of Directors on Wednesday, 31 March 2009, in Tunis.

The National Education Emergency Support Programme aims at making education available to all and improving the quality of teaching and the system’s performance by accelerating the implementation of reforms prescribed in the National Education and Training Charter, as well as consolidating gains and making the necessary readjustments.

Malawi Reaches Completion Point under HIPC Initiative

Obtains major debt relief from the ADB

Tunis, 15 November 2006 –The Boards of Directors of the African Development Bank (ADB) and the African Development Fund (ADF) today agreed that Malawi had effectively met the conditions and reached the completion point under the enhanced framework of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.

The Bank Group’s share of debt relief will amount to US$ 70.5 million at 1999 Net Present Value terms (US$ 108.89 million in nominal terms), which is equivalent to about 14.6 percent of the multilateral creditors’ assistance.
