Fragile Countries Must Lead in Peacebuilding and Statebuilding

In closing intensive discussions on peacebuilding and statebuilding in Africa, African leaders and assembled experts called for new peace- and statebuilding goals to guide global aid and country level action. They stressed the importance of shared assessment and management of risk to support transitions out of fragility and increase investments in country systems and local capacity.

Boosting Rwanda’s Energy Sector: AfDB, other Lenders Commit USD 91.25 million to Kivuwatt Project

Kigali, Rwanda - 24 August 2011 - The African Development Bank and other lenders have committed USD91.25 million to the development of the Kivuwatt power project in Rwanda, under a loan agreement signed with ContourGlobal, a project developer, on Wednesday, 24 August 2011 in Kigali. The project’s total cost is USD 142.2 million. Development Finance Institutions will contribute USD 91 million, of which the AfDB will provide USD 25 million.

AfDB, Others Commit USD165 million to Railway Infrastructure in East Africa

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed USD40 million to support a five-year capital investment programme for Rift Valley Railways, a consortium established to manage the parastatal railways of Kenya and Uganda.

The AfDB’s funding is part of a USD165 million long-term foreign currency-lending programme with other international financial institutions. The Rift Valley Railways consortium won the bid for private management of the over 100-year old Kenya-Uganda railway in 2005.

Boosting Regional Integration and Trade in West Africa: AfDB Approves a Loan of up to € 60 Million to finance the Lomé Container Terminal

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a €60-million loan for the construction of a new container terminal at the Lome Port in Togo.

The project involves the construction, development and operation of a new transshipment container handling terminal. It will be executed under a 35-year concession agreement and will have an annual handling capacity of 1.5 million 20-feet container units. A Togolese company, Lomé Container Terminal S.A,  will execute the project.
