The project objective is to develop a new international airport to replace the old one in Dakar.
AIBD will create jobs and enable a transfer of technology for Senegal.During the construction phase, it is expected that approximately 3000 local workers will be employed (at current stage 1000 workers are employed). On completion, the airport will employ about 500 full-time employees. In addition to direct employment at the airport, the project will require other services such as engineering, spare parts, information technology and services, catering and cleaning, which will contribute to the local economy. Other main benefits are; (i) generate revenues for the government through taxation of AIBD-SA and royalties, (ii) reduction in noise and danger in residential areas where the existing airport is located, (ii) benefit for the government through property for the existing airport's land, and (iii) reduction in traffic to downtown Dakar since 60% of the traffic will be to tourist areas to down south.
The AIBD will meet new international air transport regulations both in terms of security and infrastructure quality and will develop space for the performance of airport-related industrial activities such as aeronautical maintenance. The proposed new airport will relieve the air- and road-congestion at the existing Dakar airport, which is located in the heart of Dakar. At the same time, it will provide Senegal with a new and state-of-art airport capable of transform Dakar in a Regional Hub, by capturing an important share of the transfer passengers.
