The objectives of the study are to carry out (i) updating of the feasibility study including EIA and (ii) detailed engineering design including the preparation of tender documents for roads selected based on the results of the feasibility study.
The study consists of: 1.Preparation of the feasibility study 2.Detailed engineering design including the preparation of tender documents for the selected roads.
The direct benefits of the study are that the Government will be able to mobilise finance for the construction phase of the project. The subsequent improvement/rehabilitation will contribute significantly to the reduction of the road transport costs in Zanzibar.
The Bank is actively involved in the improvement of the transport sector in Tanzania as well as in assisting in the implementation of the economic recovery programme. The proposed study will extend the operations in this sector to Zanzibar which has so far not benefited from the past operations. The ultimate project is likely to involve a combination of rehabilitation and upgrading which are recognized as priority areas in the transport policy. The transport sector is also accorded priority in the Bank's CSP.
