The project is designed to complement the OPSD3 Nacala Rail and Port Project in order to support inclusive growth along the Nacala Corridor in Malawi. The main goal of the TA project is to improve on the efficiency and competitiveness of local businesses in the Nacala Corridor for accelerated economic and social growth in Malawi. The project will involve two main interventions:

(i) Piloting value addition of targeted crops in Malawi. Emphasis under this intervention will be placed on building the capacity of growth oriented agribusiness entrepreneurs in selected rural and semi-rural areas along the Nacala Corridor to enable them to build innovative and competitive rural agro-processing small and medium businesses that will catalyze change of mindsets of the smallholder farmers in growing food and cash crops as a business. Additionally, the growth oriented entrepreneurs to be referred to as "champions" will be supported with linkages to access markets and finance, and

(ii) Building the capacity of SME support institutions in Malawi for sustainable support to SMEs in the Nacala Corridor. The project will exploit synergies with other Bank projects such as the Small holder Irrigation and value addition project (SIVAP) and the competitiveness and Job Creation project and the Malawi government One Village One Product (OVOP) program.
