As the SADC region envisages to increas its intra-regional integration, it has emabrked together with the Southern African countries on various programs of developing regional links and corridors. The countries have also at their end developed national and regional programs to increase their integration with each other. The region is characterised by te large geographical areas of its countries, and this has posed developmental challenges in terms of being unable to utilise and exploite the richness of these countries, having scattered and socially excluded communities with little access to economic hubs, social services, and trade opportunites. The northern part of Mozambique has been a typical zone that sufferred from such issues, mainly due to the remotness of the area and lack of connectivity with the rest of the country. The Bank is currently fianncing the Montepuez-Lichinga road corridor in the northern part of the country, together with JICA, which will help reduce the exclusion of the northern areas. The subject project will contribute to the same goal, but will further increase the integration with the northern neighbout Tanzania, completing the already initiated process (construction of the Unity bridge) ..
The project will lead to better regional integration with Tanzania that will see trade volumes and people movements increase at the regions concerned. These population will improve their household income and well being as a result of increased access to economic opportunities and social services. Nationally the road will lead to economic gains measured in terms of time and travel cost saving. Strategically the road will pave the way, together with other anticipated future measures, to generate economic activities in the northern region of Mozambique and the souther regions of Tanzania. ..
