Background Information

Bilateral relations between the AfDB and UNFPA began in 1988. The areas of cooperation between both institutions mainly cover initiatives on girls’ enrolment, vaccination, maternal health, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS and its impact on children and families,  and water and sanitation.

Joint Initiatives

  • Effective collaboration through the Forum on Harmonization for Health in Africa (HHA) to provide support to governments in Africa particularly in the areas of Health Financing
  • Resource mobilization efforts for  the Campaign for Accelerating Maternal Health in Africa (CARMMA)
  • Collaboration with UNFPA to help demonstrate value for money in Health Sectors including maternal health
  • Collaboration on reproductive and basic socio-demographic data and statistics: merger of ADB macro-economic data with UNFPA socio-demographic data
  • Collaboration: monitoring/evaluation of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs); support for reproductive health and gender equality.

Formal Arrangements and Financial Contribution

The first AfDB-UNFPA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in 1992 and subsequently amended in 2003.
