Italy joined the African Development Fund (ADF) in 1975 and the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 1982.
Italy contributes to the following initiatives:
Initiative for Risk Mitigation in Africa (IRMA) - The Government of Italy provides grant funds in support of the Bank’s ope-rations through a Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in 1998. This fund supports the Bank’s Initiative for Risk Mitigation in Africa since June 2010. IRMA aims to encourage the effective use of existing risk mitigation products as a catalyst for mobilizing investment for infrastructure projects in Africa. The amount of the initiative is 2.4 million euros. The initiative is now completed.
Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) - ICA was launched at the G8 Gleneagles summit in 2005. Italy financially supports the scaling up of investment for infrastructure development in Africa from both public and private sources. Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) - Launched by the AfDB in 2003, the RWSSI aims at accelerating access to improved rural water supply and sanitation facilities in Africa, in a sustainable way, by mobilizing potential resources and leveraging additional investments in the sector, while addressing the Millennium Development Goals. Italy financially supports the RWSSI.
Sierra Leone Bumbuna Hydropower Project (BHP) - The Italian Government supported this project for 30 million euros (2004-2009). Bumbuna Project is completed and is generating power.
