AfDB Supports Governance Training for Civil Society Representatives

As part of its strategic support of better governance in Africa, the African Development Bank (AfDB) provided support for the training of 60 civil society representatives at an event organized in Dakar between the 12 and 15 June.

The training was part of the AfDB’s increased support for demand-side governance in the implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (EITI).  The people being trained were from 14 Francophone and Lusophone countries. The AfDB’s governance, economic management and financial reforms department experts Bady Baldé and Ahmed Ismail Mahdi attended the meeting.

The event was organized by the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Coalition, and was cosponsored by the AfDB, the World Bank Institute, OSIWA (Open Society Institute for West Africa) and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition to its financial contribution to the conference, the AfDB representatives took part in discussions and made major contributions during plenary and parallel sessions.

Among others, the sessions discussed the Bank’s support to EITI implementation and provided training on comparative analysis of reports. Messrs Baldé and Mahdi said: “The Bank will deploy greater effort to effectively engage key actors, who are demanding better governance of Africa’s natural resources.”

For her part, PWYP’s international director, Marinke van Riet, welcomed the AfDB’s support and expressed interest in future collaboration.
