Angola Country Office Manager presents accreditation letters to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs
The Country Manager of the African Development Bank (AfDB) for Angola, Joseph Martial Ribeiro, presented his accreditation letters to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for Angola, Téte António, on November 23, 2017. The ceremony marked a historical moment in the cooperation between the Bank and the Angolan authorities.
During the audience, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for Angola highlighted the critical role that the African Development Bank plays in supporting the developmental agenda, and he stressed that the Bank is “pillar” to the government’s efforts to accelerate broad-based economic growth in Angola, and it has been instrumental in fostering regional integration.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs also praised Ribeiro’s professional track record and his exceptional achievements within the African Development Bank, in particular, when he served as a Resident Representative in Mozambique. Teté António also appreciated the fact that Ribeiro, being a seasoned international development practitioner with an extensive knowledge of development strategies and policies, will surely help the country to achieve its developmental goals.
According to Teté António, the appointment of Ribeiro comes in a special moment as the country is inaugurating a new era regarding economic development, in which, all government institutions are urged to put economic diplomacy at the core of their engagement with international organizations as per the recommendations of the country’s new President of the Republic, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, in his inaugural speech. The Secretary of State concluded by stressing the need for increased support from the Bank as the needs for partnership between the Bank and the government of Angola is deemed reciprocal.
Joseph Martial Ribeiro, for his part, expressed appreciation to the government of Angola, and, in particular, to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for his cordial reception. He went on to reinforce African Development Bank’s current support being provided to the government of Angola in various fields from agriculture, fisheries, water and sanitation, transport, environment, financial sector. The Country Manager also informed about the successful conclusion on November 22, 2017, of the negotiations of US $101.7 million new agricultural and value chains development project for Angola.
Ribeiro also informed the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs about the Bank President’s intentions to visit Angola in a near future to reinforce the cooperation between the Bank and the government of Angola. The Country Manager concluded his remarks by stressing his commitments to continue strengthening economic diplomacy with the country as well as support Angola’s goals of accelerating economic diversification and enhance structural transformation.
