WHAT: Workshop for Eastern Africa policy-makers onGender Mainstreaming in Climate Change Policies, Plans and Strategies”

WHERE: EKA Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya

WHEN: 16-17 May 2019

The African Development Bank and its partners will host a two-day strategy workshop for policy makers from ten East African countries. The ‘Gender Mainstreaming in Climate Change Policies, Plans and Strategies’ event will be held at EKA Hotel on 16 and 17 May 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The training is part of a series of capacity building activities by the Bank and the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation to help African countries fast track and achieve green, inclusive and sustainable development, and deliver on their goals for climate action. The Bank has implemented several interventions to increase inclusivity and ensure sustainable development in line with its High 5 agenda, Gender Strategy and Second Climate Change Action Plan.

The Bank is co-hosting the event through its Inclusive Climate Change Adaptation for a Sustainable Africa, funded by the Korea-Africa Economic Corporation.

The other hosts are the African Working Group on Gender and Climate Change, the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research and the Research Program on Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security, World University Service of Canada and Women in Global Science and Technology.

Gender inequality is increasingly recognized as an impediment to achieving resilient and sustainable economic and social development in Africa. The exclusion of half the population from social, political, and economic stages will hinder successful implementation of climate change interventions. The African Development Bank’s  Second Climate Change Action Plan (2016-2020) stresses the link between gender and climate must be an integral dimension of the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies and investment plans.

The event brings together policy makers from East Africa to discuss best approaches to gender mainstreaming in climate change adaptation policies, plans and strategies. It will also provide an opportunity for participants to understand the relevance of gender dimensions in climate change adaptation and mitigation and in developing gender-responsive climate actions through different methods and tools that can enable them to formulate, implement, monitor, and evaluate gender-responsive policies and strategies.
