The African Water Facility (AWF) organized its 17th Governing Council Meeting on January 22-23, 2018 in Dakar, Senegal. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation of Senegal and chaired by Mansour Faye, Chair of the Governing Council and Minister of Water and Sanitation of Senegal.
Thirty participants representing African Ministers in charge of water resources, development partners, observers and recipients of AWF grants attended the meeting.
The main highlights of the event were the review and endorsement of the AWF 2017 Progress Report and the Facility 2018 Work Plan and Budget, and the approval of the proposal of the Establishment of the African Urban Sanitation Investment Fund Programme (AUSIF) jointly prepared with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The AUSIF programme is expected to attract funding of up to US $14.5 million from the Gates Foundation.
The African Water Facility (AWF) is a multilateral fund that provides grants and technical assistance to enable governments, NGOs and private-public partnerships to secure investments and implement sustainable water projects throughout Africa. Since 2006, the facility has funded 117 national and regional projects in across 52 countries, including Africa’s most vulnerable states.
The AWF has mobilized more than €2.1 billion as a result of its project preparation activities. On average, each €1 contributed by the AWF has attracted €32 in additional follow-up investments.
