The African Development Bank Group has led an intervention in Benin, where over 60,000 people are living with HIV, aimed at enabling the country to take the helm in the fight against the disease.

As part of AfDB’s investments in Benin’s human capital, the project had a strong focus on local ownership and capacity building, resulting in:

  • The training of 241 health workers in screening and treatment of HIV/AIDS, resulting in 200,000 people screened and 7,305 HIV-positive people treated.
  • The training of 600 traditional healers and the development of a treatment regime for HIV/AIDS based on traditional medical practices.
  • A campaign with six local organizations on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. The campaign involved online and print media initiatives, as well as face-to-face sessions, which alone reached more than 150,000 people.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group is preparing a Human Capital Development Strategy that sees Africa’s greatest asset as its people. The Bank recognizes that a skilled, technologically savvy, mobile and healthy workforce is the key to promoting inclusive and green growth, reducing poverty and harnessing the potential of 1 billion people.
