To provide adequate treated water to the City of Harare to meet the demand up to the year 2000, by providing an additional 227,000 m3/d to the exisiting system.
The original scope of the project comprised: - Supply and Installation of water treatment plant; - Supply and Installation of a clear water pumping equipment; - Supply and Installation of waste water treatment plant; - Civil Works for components A, B and C above; - Supply and Installation of a 1,3000 mm diameter 27,5 km long steel pumping main; - Engineering Services; and - Acquisision of water meters and control equipment. The bulk of the above works were completed by 1992, following which, the Borrower requested for Bank's approval to utilize the loan balance to carry out the following works: - Extension of the Warren Pumping Station (Civil & Elecro-mechanical works); - Extension of transmission main between Warren and Letombo; The Bank was agreeable to the request.
When the project works are commissioned the back-log of development activities that build up as a result of non-availability of water supply will reduce. The project's overall benefit will be sustaining socio-economic growth.
The existing water production capacity has been outstipped by the demand. The proposed works form the only logical development of these facilities. Bank Group participation should help contribute to socio-economic development of the city.
