Description

The study has been undertaken in two parts, Phase I and Phase II works. Phase I Study has been done in-house by the Department of Water Development and the scope of works of this phase is as follows: a) Pre-feasibility of the raw water sources; b) Feasibility study of the selected dam site; c) Final Designs and Tender Documents for the dam and appurtenant works; Phase II of the Study covers the water supply system including intake, treatment, transfer and distribution. This is being executed by a consultants. The scope of works of Phase II Study is as follows: a) Detailed technical study of the existing water supply system including basic data collection, development of design criteria, assessment of project requirements, development, evaluation and selection of alternatives and project definition; b) Institutional, financial, socio-economic and environmental studies; c) Preparation of a unified feasibility study report incorporating the findings of the water sources study; d) Detailed designs, and draft tender documents.

Benefits

The project area covers the City of Harare, the adjoining townships Chitungwiza, Epworth and Norton as well as other smaller settlements outside the municipal bondaries but supplied from Harare which include the service centre of Ruwa. Depending on the final location of the proposed source, other centres along a reasonable distance of the pipeline route will be considered for supply. Thus their demands should be taken into consideration at an early stage. The City of Harare which forms the bulk of the supply area, extends over an area of 559 km2, Chitungwiza Town Council with an area of 42 km2 and Epworth having an area of 22 km2. The City's total area is nearly 624 km2, of which 75% is fully developed. The City has an estimated population of 1,320,000 living in various classes of settlements from high income areas with densities of about 50 persons per hectare to low income areas with densities upward of 200 persons heavy as well as a developed Central Commercial District.
