The objective of the project is to increase aquaculture production in Namibia. This will be done by building capacity amongst Government staff, allowing the Government of Namibia to support the sector and to timely react to any issues that may arise within the aquaculture sector.

The project activities to be financed from the Trust Fund will focus on Capacity Building of Government staff in the following fields: Shellfish Aquaculture, Reproduction of Tilapia and Clarias species, Feed formulation, feeding strategies, fish processing techniques.

A performance indicator for this activity will be gender disaggregated data on the number of participants per course, and the percentage of participants that applies the technique within three months of the training.

The National Aquaculture Master Plan for Namibia proposes an approach to increasing Namibia's freshwater aquaculture production consisting of four cornerstones: "An enabling regulatory and operational environment "Securing financial, natural and human capital "Creating a technological and educational platform "Promoting aquaculture products

Several immediate actions are proposed in the Master Plan: "Inventory of water sources "Introduction of new species (species diversification for fast growers) "Securing and improving aquafeeds "Needs driven research covering marketing, development of low cost production systems, environmental management, post-harvest value addition and quality and food safety "Monitoring of sector to quantify progress

The current proposal makes a start with addressing these actions: through capacity building human capacity will be improved and aquafeed formulation/production will be improved

The project will be implemented as follows:

Capacity Building: A training provider will be selected through Shopping, addressing the need in Namibia to improve capacity in the fields of feed formulation, fish reproduction (tilapia and clarias), feed production, and shellfish culture. Preference will be engaging a provider from a country where aquaculture is already at an advanced stage, such as Korea. Once the provider is selected the training programme will be finalized

the objective of the project is to increase national freshwater aquaculture production from 28.5 ton to 1000 ton per year, to reduce post-harvest losses by 30% in year 5, and to increase the fish product exports through a certified lab

The direct beneficiaries of the project are the Government Staff whose capacity will be improved through training.

Apart from the direct beneficiaries, the Government of Namibia will also benefit, as through improved capacity on aquaculture, it will be in a better position to manage the sector, and address eventual issues/bottlenecks preventing the further development of the sector.
