The project has three (3) components that focus on (a)Increasing access for graduates to the job market; (b) Improving the quality of graduate programme, and (c) Enhancing regional cooperation for ESDA.
Component 1: Increasing access for graduates to the job market. The ESDA programme is designed not only for African students but also for students from outside Africa who are interested in contributing to sustainable development in Africa. When implemented, the programmes will not only be open to the students at the partner universities but also to students from other African universities willing to enroll in one of the partner universities. This will create a pool of professionals in sustainable development across border as the programme is implemented by collaboration of several universities beyond a country.
Component 2: Improvement of the quality and relevance of graduate programme. The ESDA Programmes will be implemented by African universities which are intent upon leading a common post-graduate programme on sustainable development in Africa. These universities are collaborating to maximize their impact on sustainability of Africa's development through combined efforts in professional development. Also the ESDA program supports the improvement the existing post-graduate programme of partner universities rather than creating a totally new programme.. This component will also emphasize field-oriented programme designed to strengthen problem-solving capacities and inter-personal work skills of graduate students. The ESDA programme will bring the graduate students to the field, be it a farm, urban slums, factories, mines or government extension service outposts, to address practical issues that relate to sustainable development concerns in each setting. The programme has a 'demand-driven' character and could serve as a new platform for dialogues between the universities and the field-level stakeholders
Component 3: Enhancing Regional Cooperation for ESDA. The ESDA Programme has created concrete modalities for inter-university sharing of complementary strengths among the partner universities so as to enrich the existing programmes of the respective universities with improved curricular construct and enhanced instructional capacity. The programme will build on this momentum to strengthen regional cooperation in ESDA through mobility of students, teachers, researchers and joint R&D activities..
The l aim of the Project isto promote education for sustainable development (ESDA) in African countries through training of professionals at the post-graduate (Masters) level. Graduates from this programme are expected to serve as planners, organizers, instructors, field development agents and practitioners for sustainable development in these countries.
The project objectives are aligned with the pillar of Regional Integration Strategy Paper (RISP) in South, East, Central and West Africa regarding building capacity for effective implementation as well as South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria CSPs. All these documents aim to support the country to become more competitive by creating high quality human resources. (Ghana) (Pillar1) Improving productivity in Ghanaian enterprises and, (Pillar 2) Supporting economic and structural reforms aimed at improving the business environment. Pillar 1 has Skills Development and Linking with labour market through enhancing entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. (Kenya) (Pillar1) Supporting Infrastructure for Enhanced Growth and (Pillar 2) Enhancing Employment Opportunities for Poverty Reduction. Pillar 2 has Human Resource Development as priorities. (Nigeria) (Pillar1) Supporting the Development of a Sound Policy Environment and (Pillar 2) Investing in Critical Infrastructure to Promote the Development of the Real Sector of the Economy. Pillar 2 has public private partnerships and job creation as priorities. (South Africa) (Pillar1) Infrastructure and (Pillar2) Regional Integration. Pillar 2 has Human Resource Development as priority. (Zambia) (Pillar1) Support to Infrastructure Development and (Pillar 2) Support to Economic and Financial Governance. Pillar 1 has Enhance the quality of human development as priorities.
The beneficiaries are students, universities, labor market.
