Toilets in schools matter – how African Development Bank is making a difference

At 14, Mercy Kamanga dropped out of school at Standard eight in St Paul’s Primary School in Mzimba, Malawi, due to a lack of suitable sanitation facilities. “The toilets at our school were very few, small, dilapidated and didn’t have doors; only a piece of cloth covered the entrance. Cecilia Phiri is a student at Chancellor College in Malawi. Located in Zomba, about 300 km south of Lilongwe, Chancellor College (CHANCO) is the largest of the five constituent colleges composing the University of Malawi, which was established in 1965.
