Horn of Africa countries launch regional initiative as peace dividend beckons, $15 billion investment on the cards

Five Horn of Africa countries have launched an initiative to forge closer economic ties, building on the improving political climate in the sub-region. The initiative was formalized on 18 October, on the sidelines of the World Bank Group/IMF Annual Meetings in Washington DC. The countries agreed on priority projects and programs that will constitute the initiative, which is being developed by the countries with support from the African Development Bank, the European Union and the World Bank. The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending of September 2019 constant 4.0 percent compared to the 4.0 percent recorded for the year ended August 2019. The Annual Food Crops Inflation increase 10.6 percent for the year ending September 2019 compared to 8.6 percent recorded for the year ended August 2019.The drivers of changes were Tangerines an increase to 2.7 percent for the year ending September 2019 compared to 1.7 percent registered for the year ending August 2019.

The All Groups CPI was 116.07 in the month of September 2019, compared with 115.41 in the month of August 2019. The monthly change, September 2019 compared to August 2019, was an increase of 0.57 percent. This is compared to a monthly decrease of -0.81 percent in the previous month of August 2019. There were no significant monthly price increases during the month of September. Over the twelve months to the month of September 2019 (inflation rate), the All Groups CPI decreased 5.17 percent, compared with 5.80 percent over the twelve months to the month of August 2019.

The All Groups CPI was 115.41 in the month of August 2019, compared with 116.36 in the month of July 2019. The monthly change, August 2019 compared to July 2019, was a decrease of -0.81 percent. This is compared to a monthly decrease of -0.55 percent in the previous month of July 2019. The most significant monthly price increases were Tobacco & Narcotics and Transport (+4.24%) and (+2.76) respectively. The monthly change, February 2019 compared to January 2019, was an increase of 1.03 percent (1.03 index points).
