Project Brief - Damietta container terminal
As shown in Figure 1 below, the Damietta port is situated on the Mediterranean coastof Egypt, about 37 km west of Port-Said and about 9 km of Dumyat city. Theport’s operations commenced in 1986. The port currently handles exports ofagricultural products, fertilizers and furniture as well as the receipt of imported goodsuch as petrochemicals, cement, grains, flour, and general cargo with a total capacityof about 5.6 million tonnes annually.Damietta is well connected by roads and railways that provide a source ofcompetitive advantage for the port compared to other Egyptian terminals. However, theport’s existing facilities are unable to serve the potential demand of 4.5 million twenty foot Container Equivalent Units (TEUs), which would make it one of the largesttransshipment facilities in the Mediterranean and the only one capable of handling thenew generation of large containerships.
